One of the greatest motorcycle icons of the 20th century, the original Speed Twin set a new global standard for performance.
The Speed Twin changed the face of motorcycling. An incredible world-first successful parallel twin paired with a cutting-edge chassis paved the way for every twin that followed – and became the most popular motorcycle configuration in history.
For 2019, the name is reborn in the very latest generation of the word-famous Bonneville twins, with a high-torque 1200cc evolved further from the Thruxton power-plant. The new Speed Twin brings together the perfect marriage of timeless Triumph DNA and a new class-leading dynamic riding set up.
The ‘rider’s’ bike
Revealed in Paris at an exclusive launch party, the new bike delivers everything you’d expect of the latest class-leading modern classic roadster: precision; agility; and fantastic power delivery. A new standard of handling performance delivered by a new benchmark in chassis, brakes and suspension set up.
High-specification twin Brembo 4-piston axial calipers on the front with twin discs and a 2-piston floating caliper and single disc on the rear mean it’s got fantastic stopping power. Match this with adjustable spring pre-load and the chassis developed from the already impressive Thruxton R and you’re looking at real modern classic roadster dynamic riding performance and handling.
Lighter and more powerful
With 97PS peak power @ 6,750rpm, the new Speed Twin achieves an impressive 76% increase over the 2016/17 Street Twin, and 49% more than the 2018 Street Twin.
Additionally, the new Speed Twin engine also delivers a strong peak torque figure of 112 Nm @ 4,950rpm – an amazing 40% more than the 2018 Street Twin.
This is all thanks to an engine that’s undergone special updates just for the Speed Twin. New magnesium cam covers, revised clutch assembly and new mass-optimised engine covers make a 2.5kg weight saving over the Thruxton engine. The Speed Twin also features a low inertia crank and high compression head.
The Speed Twin is unmistakably unique in style and poise – aggressive, sporty and classic. Beautiful upswept silencers come with satin black painted wrap and stainless steel end caps. They are designed to deliver a ‘unique exhaust note’ – rich, deep and full.
As always, Triumph has executed any modern technology with taste and finesse. The liquid cooling system is carefully integrated to minimise its visual impact while achieving clean emissions and enhanced fuel efficiency.
Roadster-level technology means performance and handling are at the forefront. Riding modes include Sport, Road and Rain, each with dedicated throttle maps and traction control settings providing enhanced rider control and safety. In Sport mode there is a more immediate throttle response. Other features include ABS, switchable traction control, LED DRL headlight, ride-by-wire and torque-assisted clutch.
Modern custom style
Incredibly muscular in stance, this is a bike that looks fast even when stationary. Without a doubt this is the most contemporary of all the Bonneville line-up, with class-leading finish and stunning touches such as the sleek 14-litre tank, custom-style bench seat, minimal front and rear mudguards with small rear light and modern bar end mirrors. The clear anodised aluminium swingarm and forged aluminium headlight brackets are striking.
This is a bike that’s designed for riders to add their own personal touches to. It can be tweaked to suit your riding style and practical needs.
There’s over 80 custom-inspired accessories to choose from: brushed Vance & Hines silencers; blacked-out detailing; quilted seat; and plenty of Triumph-engineered security additions too, such as disc locks, ground anchor and locking chain.
