As the rest of us ease lazily into another year, a group of men and their motorcycles are gathering at a frozen lake near the Canadian border.

Snowploughs have forged a racetrack through the snow and ice for riders to go wheel to wheel and shoulder to shoulder at speeds of up to 90mph. The surface is no respecter of reputation. It’s hard, unforgiving, sharp and the only way to master it is by hitting the bumps with just enough throttle.
