Speed Triple 2018

BIKE LAUNCH: Speed Triple S and RS

… and watch Foggy vs Johnson – who's faster?

The aggressive stance, raw look and brutal performance has been a staple of the Speed Triple since 1994. A pioneer of the streetfighter scene is back with more of, well, everything.

What’s new?

With 105 new engine parts, the 2018 Speed Triple models are promising to be sharper, smarter and more responsive than their previous incarnations. The new models have received a major engine upgrade for more power and torque, a new TFT screen, keyless ignition (RS model), backlit handlebar-mounted controls, high-specification suspension and brakes.

A closer look…

Simply put, it’s the most powerful and responsive Speed Triple ever. The Speed’s 1050cc engine capacity remains but now delivers 148bhp (up 7%) at 10,500rpm thanks to improved freer-flowing exhausts (Arrow on the RS) and a revised engine design that spins up faster. Suspension is taken care of with the fully adjustable Showa forks and monoshock on the S and Öhlins NIX30 USD forks and TTX36 twin tube monoshock for the RS.

High-spec Brembo brakes provide significant stopping power and new ten spoke wheels with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa rubber complete the handling improvements.

New tech introduced includes colour TFT screen, four riding modes as standard plus a track mode for the RS, cruise control, illuminated switches, DRL headlights and keyless ignition (RS only). There’s even a rather sci-fi sounding ‘inertial measurement unit’ on the RS, which calculates lean angles and optimises ABS and traction control.

Foggy vs Johnson

To showcase the Speed Triple’s agility, Triumph put Isle of Man TT winner Gary Johnson and Superbike legend Carl Fogarty in a head-to-head battle. Weaving in the wet and pushing the bikes hard, the two racers displayed incredible bike control.

Foggy vs Johnson Speed Triple

Foggy “It’s so agile to throw around the cones. It’s great fun to do the skids and wheelies. This has gone up another level; the handling, the agility – it’s improved in every area. It really is an update across the board. I love the previous model, but this is something else. For me, nothing beats the Speed Triple sound.”

Gary “I rode both bikes and they’re so responsive. I had last year’s model for a while and getting on this new Speed Triple I could tell straightaway, instantly, that it’s more responsive and quicker. That makes the bike feel lighter, which makes it more flickable and so enjoyable to ride.

“Shooting the video was a lot of fun. I was doing stuff I haven’t done for ages – stoppies and wheelies etc. The Speed Triple is the perfect bike for doing that sort of thing.”
